Ocean Circulation Modeling

Numerical modeling of ocean circulation is a major and powerful tool used by scientists to represent and understand the evolution of physical, chemical or biological processes in a specific ocean area. This study examines the circulation in the Caribbean Sea using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The model domain covers the region between 99 and 56°W and between 6 and 24°N, with two horizontal resolution of 1/2 °, then 1/4 °. In this practice, at first, we try to understand the fundamental principles of the physical oceanic circulation, particularly the mathematical laws that describe it, and the approximations that have been proposed and used, especially in ROMS model, in order to find the closest numerical solutions for primitive problems. Secondly, we try to imply this model to simulate the Caribbean Sea’s circulation under different conditions, while explaining all the steps followed in manipulations. Finally, some results are compared with another scientific literature, which is here, the final results produced by the Exp-CS model (Yuehua et al 2011), in which a 1/6° spatial resolution has been used.

PHYBIO_2017 CAMPAIGN

As a part of various credits of the Master’s degree OPB, boat trips were realized with the aim of creating a new data collection which will be added to those of the previous years of PHYBIO campaigns where wastewater from the treatment plant of Marseille is discharged near the Northern Current. These data were collected in the Gulf of Lions, near the city of Marseille and its surroundings, between 3/21/2017 and 3/26/2017. The sampled stations are : in the Cortiou creek, where wastewater from the treatment plant of Marseille is discharged, but also in the Cassidaigne canyon, where the Alteo plant of Gardanne, producer of alumina, has a right to evacuate its industrial discharges, or even further offshore near the Northern Current, and also near the Frioul islands in case of bad weather. The samples analyses focused on the measurements of dissolved oxygen, aluminum, ammonium, nitrates, phosphates, and some particulate and total nitrogen. These data are accompanied by thirteen vertical profiles, around five transects, using sensors hull-mounted ADCP, the CTD and sampling rosette, or the latest MVP.

Initiation to coastal modeling

Study of wave behavior, facing emergent areas using the REF / DIF model : The swell during its trajectory towards the coast, undergoes variations of local conditions of its propagation, in particular the bathymetry, of which it behaves in a way more or less modified by answering this change of conditions. This behavior results in changes of direction, height or energy that will generate phenomena such as diffraction, refraction, shoaling and breaking. In this work,using the REF / DIF model, we tried to highlight, these phenomena, when a swell faces a normal bathymetric change, or brutal, by meeting a emerged zone, natural or artificial.

Wave and the impact of hydrodynamics modeling on the sediments of the Vaccarines pond : This work consists in highlighting the behavior of the waves in the Vaccarines pond, and the effect of the hydrodynamism on the sediments. To do this, simulations and typology of waves are made through a program that calculates heights and wave periods and voltages due to currents, waves, and those resulting from both at the same time, such a program also allows us to estimate the resuspension rate of the sediment. Each physical quantity is calculated from formulas proposed either by Cerc (1975), Komar and Wang (1984), Soulsby (1997) or by Peterson (1999). The use of different formulas allowed us to analyze the sensitivity of the model response.

PHYBIO Data analysis with Matlab

The aim of this work is, in the first part, to analyze the data obtained at one of the stations during the campaign of PHYBIO 2017, in order to highlight the stratification of the water column and to evaluate its stability, by plotting the averaged values of the various parameters (temperature, salinity, density) as a function of the depth, and establishing the TS diagram. Subsequently, in the same context, the other stations are studied in the second part to evaluate the annual variability in the bay of Marseille of these parameters, by using the data of the campaign PHYBIO 2016 and compare them with those of 2017. The processing of files obtained by the CTD (ASC file) is done by Matlab software whose steps are written in the script.

COASTAL LAND COVER EVOLUTION

The Jijlien coastline has known since the last century an increasing in the human pressure which generates big changes in land cover, the study of those changes represents a major interest to the politicians and to the scientific community because it helps to know the current trends in process of deforestation, degradation, desertification and the level of artificialization. In view of the context and territorial potentials, we are particularly interested in the analysis of changes in land cover of four municipalities in the province of Jijel namely: Selma, El-Aouana, ziama mansouriah and Jijel that house the current National Park of Taza and the future Marine Protected area. To do this, we opted for the processing of satilite images with some techniques of remote sensing, and geographic information systems, and all this was in order to understand the roles of natural and anthropogenic factors controlling the development of land cover. The satellite images used are mainly from the Landsat serie, they offer a sufficient level of detail to identify the characteristics of the land cover,also they provide full coverage of our study area, in several dates.
